Fisherman`s Trail & Hikes in Arrifana

Fisherman's Trail to Arrifana

The secret door in the backyard of Surf & Yoga Retreats Portugal leads you straight into the pine forest and to the cliffs. Hiking Arrifana from here hits different & theoretically leads you to Sagres or Sines (if you felt like surfing and yoga is not enough and you want to add hiking to your holiday), since this path is part of the Fisherman`s trail.  Breathe in the fresh smell of the pine trees, listen to the sound of the waves in the distance and enjoy the soft sand floor beneath your feet. It is an easygoing, enjoyable & relatively flat walk that takes you through the forest over the plains to Arrifana. Unless you stop every 10 meters to take pictures and take in the beauty (which most certainly will happen) it is a 40min journey.

Hiking Arrifana: An Adventures Scenic Hike

If you feel up for a morning or afternoon adventure don’t miss out on this special hike. It can take between 1-2 hours, depending on how often you stop and say “WOW”.

You will walk through a forest, hike up and downhill, walk close to the cliffs, hold on to a rope on a steep path, cross wide dry riverbeds as well as narrow deep rivers (depending on the rainfall before, you might have to invent your own crossing route here. Pro Tip: use a stick to see how deep the water is before stepping in!). You will feel as if you landed in a different world throughout the hike. The air is pure, the sounds are natural, the colors on full spectrum. It is truly a hike for all senses.
You will reach the top of Arrifana by the old fort and get the feeling of stepping back into civilization after a short trip away. To get a different perspective of Arrifana beach, especially if you have already been there several times, we suggest walking down to the fisherman`s marina. Being there will tune you in with the local side of the area and set you back in time. There are fishing cages everywhere ready to be used, small fisher boats swaying in the water, cats strolling around for leftovers, and a calming sense of old-time habits. If it is low tide and the waves are not too wild, you can cross the rocks to get to the beach instead of hiking up the steep road you came from.

Adventure Trail to Arrifana

Exit the backyard of Surf & Yoga Retreats and turn right. Follow the path all the way until the little intersection. Take the left path and follow it all the way to the cliffs. Turn left again and follow the path closest to the cliffs. From there on use your intuition and let nature lead you.

Surfer`s 'Trail' to Arrifana

The quick and easy way to reach the beach is obviously by car. It is a 10min drive through the suburb of Vale da Telha. Just pack your surfboard and wetsuit, check the waves on the live cam and off you go. Park your car at the big parking lot next to the Café & Restaurant Cal, make your wave check from above to get a sense of where the waves break and hike down to the beach (just don`t forget you have to walk back up 😉).
